Experimental Archaeology at Homolovi!
Archaeologists can learn a great deal about ancient technologies through experimentation.
Test Burn of a Model Masonry Pueblo
Earthwatch volunteers and teenagers from the Student Challenge Awards Program
assisted archaeologists in constructing a one room model pueblo. The structure
was then burned to study how fire acts in a prehistoric structure. Brush was used
for the fire.
During the second summer the pueblo was expanded to two rooms and
experiments done with dried corn to see if stored corn could have caused a
pueblo fire. We used about 20 bushels of dried corn to recreate the possible
conditions leading to major burning of rooms in prehistoric sites.

Leupp Kiln Conference
The Kiln Conference is an annual event for people interested in
experimenting with different pottery firing techniques.
The 2005 and 2007 conferences were held at Homolovi Ruins
State Park. View photos of this experience in traditional pottery firing!

Agave Roast May 3-4, 2008 Coconino National Forest near Flagstaff
|
Throughout the Southwest, large roasting pits scatter the landscape. Used to process agave
(century plant), the roasting produced a sweet, though fibrous, treat for native people.
The archaeologists will be studying different roasting techniques and aspects of the roasting
process which will help them to interpret the archaeological record.
National Forest Archaeologist Peter Pilles is heading this project and will be sending us additional
information, so check back!
