Books We Avoid!
Homolovi Museum Shop

Operated by the Homolovi Chapter of the Arizona Archaeological Society
"Homolovi" is Hopi for "Place of the Little Hills"- the traditional name for Winslow, Arizona
We are careful about the books we carry- we review all of them before including them in our shop.  Unfortunately, there is a LOT of junk out there
about Native American cultures!  Granted, I don't know everything, but I know many Hopi and they are kind enough to let me know their feelings
about different books.

Realize that many Hopi feel it is improper to put religious information into print.  I take this into consideration in Children's Books.  There are
certain types of knowledge that a child should not receive until they have been initiated into a katsina society.  Therefore, we are VERY careful
with our books for children who are not at least teenagers.

We do carry books for adults that deal with sacred matters, but avoid "new age" books, as these are often a synthesis of many religions and belief
systems.

These book reviews are to let you know why we do not carry certain books.

TRUE BOOKS: HOPI

"True Books are an indispensable addition to any collection. Each book guides readers through the facts that nurture their need to know."

Our review:  A better title would be "Untrue Book: Hopi" Aimed at maybe the second or third grade, the text is not that bad, although there
are several errors.  However, I was shocked at the number of improperly labelled photographs! One of the worst was a photo of "Hopi
Kachina Dancers" that was actually a photo of Apache Crown Dancers!  It discusses religious things that should NOT be discussed in a
book intended for children, it makes numerous minor errors in the text and implies that Hopi attend schools only as high as a community
college level.  Click on the title for a more detailed review.
