HOMOLOVI ARCH SOCIETY JULY NEWSLETTER – Darlene L. Brinkerhoff

On 6/16 Chuck Adams gave us an update and slide show on the progress at the Chevelon Ruin excavations. This will
be their last field season there, with still many questions to be answered. One of their research design questions they
have been working on is; “Why does Chevelon exhibit a great amount of burnt prehistoric corn?”

The following day Chuck, Rich Lange and volunteers gave us a wonderful and extended tour at the Chevelon Ruin
site. They appeared to have progressed substantially on the excavation just in the 2 weeks they had been working.
They are giving a final 6-7 week tour near the time of closing.

On the 18th. Tim Wilcox, Charlie Gilbert and other members of the Leuppe Pottery Committee had an outdoor pottery
test firing Workshop at the Homolovi Visitor Center.  Various techniques as well as different types of fuel were used in
diff. fires. Many diff. types of pottery was made by the participants and put to the test of different temperatures and
atmospheres. It was a very good turnout and everyone had a lot of fun, with the weather holding out. However it
would not have been quite complete without Charlie Gilbert’s presence and a day with “Charlie’s Charm”!

The following day of the 19 the Pottery Committee and other interested parties followed Charlie to the hills to collect
some wonderful various colors of clay. With buckets in hand everyone prospered and literally ran home to test their
new clays. Myself I was able to see one of AAS’s new member, JoAnn Weldon’s 2 pots shecreated from the clay
harvested during this field excursion. The four days of activities tired us out as well.

We had few days to rest up for the Chevelon Steps BBQ. It turned out well with a combination of AAS members and
Arizona Site Stewards. There were many wonderful dishes brought by the participants. With the hand built awnings
and overlook, we did not get too hot in the sun. The creek was low and we were able to do 2 tours of the site. Thanks
to everyone who participated and we hope that other areas/Chapters of the state could follow and have an annual
BBQ Potluck with touring some sites in their region.
