The Third Annual Leupp Kiln Conference was held on June 18, 2005 at Homolovi Ruins State Park near Winslow,
Arizona.  The purpose of this Conference was to experiment with different firing techniques and different clays
in order to better understand the ceramic technology of the ancient peoples of the Southwestern United States.

There were half a dozen kilns of various sizes and construction.  These were fueled with juniper, coal, corn
cobs, dung, or a combination of these fuels.
Participants and park visitors try painting
pottery designs with a yucca fiber brush.
One type of kiln is a
stone lined pit.
Three different sizes
of pit kilns were
constructed.
Fires are set in the kilns...
...and the pots are placed nearby to warm.
This reduces the temperature shock when
they are placed in the hot kiln.
