Suvoyuki Day
Friday evening, July 11, 2008 and
Saturday, July 12, 2008 (at Homol'ovi)
Sunday, July 13, 2008 (at Sipaulovi)
A "joint effort" of the Hopi people, Arizona State Parks, and the Homolovi Chapter of the Arizona Archaeological
Society.  This is out big annual celebration. There will be no entrance fee on this Saturday!

Friday Activities

In the afternoon, Hopi elder Justin Setalla will begin heating the Tuupevu Pit and load the pit with corn. It will roast
overnight and we will open it in the morning.  This activity does depend upon the availability of corn!  If the crop is
not in, we will not have corn to roast!

The event actually begins Friday night, 7pm with a free program at the Visitor Center:
“Hopi Communities Along the Little Colorado River: A View from the Dirt”
            Lecture by Dr. E. Charles Adams, Arizona State Museum
           
All activities are free

5am           Open Corn Pit
            Run Registration begins
            $10 registration fee for either (6.5 mile & 4 mile cross-country course)
            The registration fee includes a T-shirt.  Sign in for a prize drawing for participants.  
            Refreshments will be provided after the run.

6 am          Homolovi Talavai Warikháalaya~Homolovi Morning Run Begins

7am         Archaeologists lead a tour of park archaeological sites.
               Homolovi II tour led by Richard Lange, University of Arizona
               Pit House Village tour led by Lisa Young, University of Michigan

8:30 am     Hopi Ethnobotany Tour by Micah Lomaomvaya

9am-4pm  Hopi artists will demonstrate Katsina doll carving, Hopi weaving, pottery, silversmithing,
                     basketmaking, piki making and parched corn

9am-4pm: Booths by organizations associated with Homolovi
               Food vendors- each will have at least one traditional Hopi food item as well as other foods.

9:30 am:   Homolovi Dancers present traditional Hopi Social Dances

10:15 am  Welcome Remarks by Hopi Chairman Benjamin Nuvamsa (invited)
              Recognition of Hopi Tribal Council’s Land Team

12 pm                Hopi Dance Group

1pm         Archaeologists lead  tours of park archaeological sites.

SUNDAY ACTIVITIES

Sipaulovi Village on Second Mesa is having a Suvoyuki Day Celebration on Sunday, July 13 from 6 am to
5pm.  Activities start at the Village Community Building.

Homolovi Camping: All sites have water and electric hookups. If you plug into the electricity, the fee is $19.  If
you do not use the electricity, the fee is $12.  Also available are a dump station, showers, and restrooms.

We are expecting many visitors, so Saturday parking will be at the northeast corner of I-40 and State Route 87, exit 257.  Shuttle service will begin
by 7:30 am

Campers may park at the campground and ride the shuttle from there.
